3. Sample

If I were to be given the opportunity to visit a foreign country for two weeks, I would like to visit the republic of Korea (South Korea), the nearest foreign country for Japan.

To begin with, since the Republic of Korea is located very adjacent to Japan, it is convenient for me to visit her in terms of time, energy, and money.  For instance, we can visit South Korea by shuttle flights available at most airports in Japan and it takes only three hours by high-speed boats from Fukuoka to get to there.  Moreover, by reciprocal agreement by Japan and the Republic of Korea, Japanese citizens can visit South Korea without VISA up to ninety days.

In addition, I would like to appreciate the culture of South Korea, which has both similarities and differences to that of Japan.  Although the relationship between the government of Japan and South Korea have turned sour several times so far, I’ve read that nearly 3 million Japanese people visited South Korea and7.5 million Korean people visited Japan the last year alone.  This civilian communication would lead to mutual understanding of the two nations and then should pave the way for developing friendly relations between the two countries.

Finally, when in the Republic of Korea, I would like to visit DMZ (Demilitarlized Zone) which runs along at latitude 40 North.  I know that while the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) agreed to cease fire in Korean War, which began in 1950, the both countries have never concluded peace agreement with each other.  It would be a good opportunity for me to experience tension which parties to the conflict, South and North Korea, Japan, China, and the US have been facing.

It is true that the recent political confrontation between Japan and the Republic of Korea might have some negative influence on visiting South Korea.  However, because of the three reasons I mentioned above,  I would like to visit the Republic of Korea if I had the opportunity to visit a foreign country.

To be continued.
