The United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which reports to both the General assembly and the Security Council, seek to promote peaceful use of atomic energy and inhibit its any use for any military purpose.
To begin with, the IAEA serves as intergovernmental forum for the peaceful use of atomic energy and nuclear power. Although the IAEA was established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the Statue, it became autonomous agency within the UN system by formal agreement in 1957. The Agency undertakes to conduct its activities in accordance with the Principles and Purposes of the United Nation’s Charter to promote peace and international cooperation and in conformity with the policies of the United Nations.
In addition, the IAEA formulates basic safety standards for radiation protection and issues regulations and codes of practice on specific types of operations, including the safe transport of radioactive materials. And the programs of the IAEA also provides international safeguard against the misuse of nuclear energy and nuclear materials. Since more than 30 countries are operating nearly 500 nuclear reactors to generate electricity, these countries have responsibility for nuclear safety not only domestically but internationally. In this regard, the UN and the IAEA have contributed to nuclear safety and environmental protection.
Finally, the IAEA has been making every effort to ensure that the assistance provided by the IAEA is not used for military purpose. And under the 1968 Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the IAEA conducts on-site inspection to confirm that nuclear materials are utilized only for peaceful purposes. Moreover, in order to address the danger of nuclear terrorism, the United Nations has produced Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material in 1986, and International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism in 2005.
In conclusion, the United Nations and the IAEA have played significant role in promoting peaceful use of nuclear and radioactive materials and provide regulations and guidelines for nuclear safety as I mentioned above.
