今回の Topic は、Official Guide to the TOEFL の Independent Essay 第２６問です。

１. Topic           

   It has recently been announced that a large shopping center may be built in your neighborhood.  Do you support or oppose this plan?  Use specific examples and reasons to support your answer.

２. Struture

a) Thesis Statement (Introduction)                

    I support the construction of a large shopping center in my neighborhood because it would make our daily life more convenient, enjoyable, and prosperous.

b) Body の部分を構成する３つの Paragraph の Main Idea は、

第１ Paragraph　大規模ショッピング・センターは買い物に関する全てのニーズを充たす

第２ Paragraph　大規模ショッピング・センターには多種多様なレストラン、劇場、映画館等の娯楽に関するニーズも充たす

 ３. Sample

      I support the construction of a large shopping center in my neighborhood because it would make our daily life more convenient, enjoyable, and prosperous.                        

     To begin with, the new large shopping center would make our daily life more convenient due to its size and scope.  With this new shopping center, all we need to do is to go there for our shopping needs.  The large shopping center usually has everything from super market, specialty stores and large scale electronics retail store.  And large shopping centers also have extensive parking lots, which makes it easier for us to buy and take home large amount of groceries and commodities.                                                   

     In addition, the new large shopping center should make our life more entertaining.  Equipped with wide variety of restaurants, movie theaters, and amusement facilities, the shopping center could satisfy every kind of our entertainment needs.  Families with small children could enjoy all day at the shopping center by taking advantage of this leisure complex without traveling to different sites to accommodate distinctive requirements.                                                                                                                           

     Finally, this new large shopping center should help the community become prosperous.  The shopping center would create a number of job opportunities.  Moreover, people in the neighborhood would spend more money at the shopping center rather than spend money outside the community.  In turn, this positive cycle would lead to the economic growth, then, to the increase of tax revenue of the community.  And the community would enjoy improved public services through increased public spending by the local government.                                           

     It is true that in some cases, existing local small businesses would be hurt by the construction of the new large shopping center.   However, because of the three reasons I mentioned above, I support the plan for building the shopping center in my neighborhood.
