In my opinion, many people visit museums when they travel to new places because museums help them cultivate education, charge low admission fees, and enable them to interact with other people.
To begin with, museums provide us with effective and efficient ways to acquaint ourselves with culture, art and science in a variety of fields. For instance, in order for us to become familiar with the history of Renaissance, Uffizi museum in Florence Italy would give us both a perspective on and a valuable insight into Renaissance era art and culture. With displays of numerous authentic works of the masters, it is far easier educating people about the era than just letting them read history books.
In addition, admission fees of most museums are very reasonable and those of some museums are free. As is often the case with travel, especially travel abroad, it takes substantial amount of money to spend a day with family members. It would cost a family of four several hundred dollars to go to well-known amusement parks. In contrast, admission fee for Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is just $25 for adults and children under the age of twelve are free. Moreover, admission for Uffizi is free for everyone.
Finally, museums function as a place for communication and interaction between people from all over the world. There are diverse kinds of lectures and workshops held in museums, as well as special events. With common interest in art, history, or science, those who attend these programs would feel comfortable to become friends with other people from diverse backgrounds. This precious experience is hard to have if we just visit famous local landmarks.
In conclusion, people visit museums when they travel to new places due to the three reasons I mentioned above.
