今回の Topic は、Official Guide to the TOEFL の Independent Essay 第２３問です。

１. Topic           

      Some people believe that the Earth is being harmed (damaged) by human activity.  Others feel that human activity makes the Earth a better place to live.  What is your opinion?  Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.

２. Struture

a) Thesis Statement (Introduction)                

       In my opinion, constructive human activities to develop societies, progress science, and to further globalization have made the Earth a better place to live.

b) Body の部分を構成する３つの Paragraph の Main Idea は、

第１ Paragraph　人間の建設的活動は、個人の人権、及び法の下での平等が保障される社会を築いてきた

第２ Paragraph　科学面での進歩、とりわけ医学の進歩は、かつて不治の病とされてきた難病をほぼ撲滅させた

第３ Paragraph　グローバル化は世界の人々の相互依存の度合いを深め、全体として戦争の危険性を減少させた

 

３. Sample        

     In my opinion, constructive human activities to develop societies, progress science, and to further globalization have made the Earth a better place to live.                     

     To begin with, constructive aspect of human activities has developed society in which every individual’s human rights are guaranteed and he or she is protected equally under the law.  In the societies, we have also developed basic infrastructures, such as roads, electricity, public medication and education, to improve the standards of living.  As a result, people have plenty of opportunities to develop their personality and to contribute to the societies.                                           

     In addition, human activities in scientific area have helped us lead a healthy life.  Advances in medicine have made great achievements in nearly eradicating diseases which inflicted huge suffers in the past.  For example, plague, also known as Black Death, which was once thought to be lethal, has become less serious after antibiotics such as penicillin was developed in early twentieth century.  Moreover, tremendous progress in AI and precision instrument has made it possible for robots to carry out complex surgeries better than human doctors.                                                                                                                       

     Finally, economic activities by humans have played a significant role in globalization, which has also made humans across the world interconnected and interdependent.  Europe had been suffered from numerous full-scale wars between great powers until the end of the World War II, but today, almost no one should think that war would ever happen again in Europe.  Thanks to the European Union and the Treaty of Schengen, people in Europe can enjoy freedom of movement without customs and passport checks at the borders.                                      

     In conclusion, human activities have made the Earth better place to live due to the three reasons I mentioned above.
